Always use an approved SOLAR filter to photograph the sun and no a super powered ND (neutral density) filter isn't the same thing.  NASA's website is a great tool for finding retailers who sell SOLAR filters. 

As a note any camera sensor damage as a result of shooting the Sun (regardless of filter used) will not be covered by our Lenscap protection plans.
